What readers are saying about Dog eat Doug “If you like Calvin and Hobbes, then this is a must read. It is full of ridiculous references and subtle yet very effective humor. I LOVE dog eat Doug.” - Ethan “Love dogs, love kids, this is the comic strip and book for me. Yes there is an homage to Calvin & Hobbes and even Peanuts, but this strip has a charm all it's own and I love it. Even named our dog Sophie.” - Kellie Russ “Page after page of laugh out loud fun. I've been reading about Doug and Sophie for a while and just love their adventures. This is a good read for all ages.” - Ruth Craig “It took a long time to find a comic that could replace Calvin and Hobbes for me.” - Peter Mol “Brian Anderson is a genius. I love his writing and his characters are ever endearing. My only gripe about this second collection of Sophie the Lab, baby Doug and their family is the book ends far too soon - I wish there were more! You can't go wrong with Brian Anderson, his stories and art. Enjoy!” - Banzai In the spirit of Snoopy and Charlie Brown, or Calvin and Hobbes, Dog eat Doug is the cartooning creation of Brian Anderson that follows the daily exploits of Sophie, a cheese-loving chocolate Lab with a nose for the nuances of sarcasm and irony, and baby Doug, a healthy, happy newborn with no concept of jealousy and a limitless curiosity. Together, this dynamic duo adjusts to sharing the spotlight, the toys, and the affections of Mom and Dad, while exploring nature and its majesty, the couch and its cushions, and the cookie jar and its contents. And if you enjoy this collection, you’ll find a link to download another free book of Dog eat Doug, stuffed with dog humor, cats, babies and other lovable animals.

I have loved this strip since it came out. And while sometimes it goes into places I'm just not fond of (I'm not a cat person so some of the time spent on cats to me is just wasted panel space) it doesn't disappoint.

Anyone with dogs will be able to appreciate so many of these comics. I think everyone has had one of *those* dogs, and had some of these exact same experiences.

I didn't get to have the fun of the dog and baby at the same time, but having done both separately, there's just so much here to enjoy and reminisce (and grumble about in angry memory) on each page.

I haven't followed any comic strip very closely since Bill Watterson stopped doing Calvin and Hobbes, but this is the only other one that really grabbed my attention and held it.

Great job, and some of the Sunday panels are outright works of art.

I hope he stays around for a long time for us to enjoy.

What everyone else said above. Brian is a master of the short strip, both within terms of the artwork, and the telling of a visual story. Sophie and Dougie come alive panel after panel, cultural reference after reference.Where else could you find Michael Bay directing the next Cars sequel, sitting right next to spiders paragliding from rotating fans?
Dog eat Doug Volume 9 The Ninth Comic Strip Collection by Brian Anderson is yet another hilarious romp with the crazy baby duo. Fun and clever comics that are sure to get a giggle out of the most hardened of hearts. Most of these comics can be related to life in some ways which makes them even funnier.
Enter the delightful world of Sophie, a precious pooch, who coexists with Doug, a baby, and a pair of evil genius cats! Oh, and throw in some squirrels and birds to make this one of the most enjoyable comic strips I've read in a while. If you're a dog or cat lover, this collection is a MUST! And even if you're not a pet owner, you'll enjoy these! Just the BEST! *****
It's not as funny to me as Calvin and Hobs, but it's close. The cuteness of Sophie the dog and Doug the baby grew on me. As evening approaches, I look forward to reading a few pages of these cuties' antics before bed. Every few strips I find myself laughing out loud. But that's not necessary to enjoy them--the interaction of very likable personalities gradually make the characters seem like family, so pleasure is found in being with them whether or not there are actual laughs. Thanks, Mr. Anderson!
My 9yo grandson read this collection in one night - he loves DeD that much! The humor definitely appeals to him, as do the quirky, adorable animals and characters. My appreciation of this book is equal but more because of the sweet affection between Dough and Sophie, and the dog and her other humans and other weird friends, and the terrific artwork. Brian Anderson is one of a very small handful of terrific artists doing strips today, and the fact he can match the visual with adorable, insightful, and sometimes very strange dialog, is just terrific.
Dog Eat Doug is one of the best strips around right now. Sophie, the much put upon Lab, baby Doug, and the two mischievous cats, Chewwy and Equinox get involved in some crazy antics. Add some nutty squirrels, some strange fish, and a lake monster to the equation and you have one of the funniest, zaniest comic strips around right now. Brian Anderson knows exactly what to do with his characters and brings them to life in a wonderful fashion. If you've ever had a baby, or a dog, or a cat, or just want some great laughs, Dog Eat Doug Volume 9 is just right for you. And check out Volumes 1-8...they are hysterically funny also.

And on the plus side, Brian Anderson is one of the nicest, most generous comic strip authors around today.
If you love dogs regardless of whether they're being adorable or ripping up your living room, you're likely to love Dog Eat Doug. I've been reading this comic strip online at GoComics for several years, and it's a delight. Sophie is a sweet and rambunctious chocolate lab pup who, true to her breed, finds every way possible to steal baby Doug's food---or at least lick it off Doug's face. But Brian Anderson's creativity extends far beyond the expected interactions between a puppy and a baby. The household also includes two diabolical cats, and the neighborhood encompasses an adorable lake monster, enterprising local squirrels, and an assortment of critters offering adventures and commentary. Various elements of science fiction and fantasy, including references to Doctor Who and Neil Gaiman, make regular appearances. My only disappointments in this collection are that most of the strips are not in color, as they are online (presumably due to the expense that would be involved in the print version), and that the lake monster appears only once. Minor grievances compared to the joy of watching Sophie and pals cavort.
I have loved this strip since it came out. And while sometimes it goes into places I'm just not fond of (I'm not a cat person so some of the time spent on cats to me is just wasted panel space) it doesn't disappoint.
